Sermon Teaching Notes

“In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another:

“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty;

the whole earth is full of his glory.” – Isaiah 6:1-3

Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying: “ ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, 'who was, and is, and is to come.” – Rev. 4:8

      Genesis 4

  • In the course of time Cain brought some…”
  • “Able brought an offering - firstborn of the flock”
  • Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast
    • Downcast ènot the “awwww, what’s wrong”
  • If you do what is right…but, if you do not – sin is crouching, but you must rule over it

Cain – Sarcastic lie…”Am I my brother’s keeper” (Able kept the flocks)

Cain’s 3 sins: arrogant offering, murder, sarcastic lie w/attittude

*Sin was indeed ruling over him*

Punished by Curses: Cursed from the Earth, Nothing from the ground

Cain: Only worried about punishment, not what he had done…

  3. Giving has no correlation in terms of how much you have
  4. Giving does have correlation to spiritual blessings
  5. Giving is to be personally determined (2 Cor. 9:7)
  6. Giving in response to need…
  7. Giving demonstrates Love…

Praying (v.5-15): Our acts towards God

The Disciples Prayer

prayer is to Glorify god, seeking God’s will in oportunities to Glorify Him, utilizing His Holy Spirit…

“And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.” – John 14:13

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.” – Rom 8:26

“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” – Eph. 6:18

Fasting (v.16-18): Our acts in relation to ourselves

Ancient pegan – demons can enter through food

Eastern Religions – mystical visions, spiritual enlightenment

Western Culture – Cosmetic; physical reasons

Mainly for sorrow, mourning…beware hypocrisy!

Our “acts” (or deeds) are the Religion we witness to God and to others…

A great deal of religion amounts to nothing more than rearranging religious “ashes” to impress the world with one’s supposed humility and devotion. The problem, of course, is that the humility (posturing, performance) is a sham, and the devotion is to self (prosperity), not God. Such religion (hypocrisy) is nothing more than a game of pretense, a game at which the scribes and Pharisees of Jesus’ day were masters. Because their religion was mostly an act, and a mockery of God’s true revealed way for His people, Jesus’ most blistering denunciations were reserved for them.
